A firmware update for the Tapo P115 caused functionality regressions in home automation. Previously working reliably with Home Assistant, the device now works intermittently and appears to require either an active internet connection or the use of the Tapo app.

Background

The Tapo P115 Smart Plug has been on the market for at least two years and was previously compatible with Home Assistant without requiring the Tapo app or an active internet connection. Earlier firmware updates did not introduce any functionality issues, and the device reliably performed its intended home automation tasks.

Firmware update causing regressions in Home Assistant

Between October and November 2025, a firmware update (reporting an October date) caused the Tapo P115 to work intermittently with Home Assistant. Users began reporting problems within less than a month of the update [1], noting that the plug now often requires either an active internet connection or the Tapo app to function. The company has not publicly responded to these reports. Attempts to restore normal functionality are discussed by the community in sources such as Home Assistant's GitHub page [2] and Reddit [3]. The issue remains unresolved.

Consumer response

Community members shared temporary workarounds and troubleshooting steps (enabling "Compatibility with third-party products" via Tapo app), however a permanent resolution from the company has not been provided. Other affected devices such as the TP15 can be connected to a Matter hub without relying on the TP-Link integrarion.
