SanDisk has officially deprecated support for the legacy "iXpand Drive" application. Existing users are now prompted via a mandatory pop-up to migrate to the new SanDisk Memory Zone app. However, the new app has introduced significant compatibility issues with legacy Lightning-based iXpand drives.
Background
SanDisk’s iXpand Flash Drive line, including the iXpand Drive Go, Luxe, and Flip models, was designed to provide external storage and automatic backup for iPhone and iPad users via a dedicated iXpand Drive App. These devices rely on proprietary software to bypass iOS file system limitations for direct media playback and photo backups.
Incident
On 30 April 2025, SanDisk officially ended support for the iXpand Drive App [1] , removing it from the Apple App Store. The company began a forced transition to the SanDisk Memory Zone app. This shift created significant functionality issues for older drives, as the company says some legacy hardware requires a firmware update to be recognised by the new app [2] . Users have reported that the transition essentially "breaks" the plug-and-play compatibility they originally purchased, particularly for older Lightning-based devices. [3]
SanDisk's Response
SanDisk stated that the transition is part of a commitment to newer products that better fit current user needs. The company advises that:
- Users can continue to use the old app if already installed, but it will no longer receive updates.
- Data can still be accessed via the iOS Files App or on Windows/macOS, though this removes the automated backup features of the original app.
- A Firmware Update may be required for certain iXpand Luxe and Phone Drive
- models to function with the new Memory Zone app.
Consumer response
Consumers have expressed frustration over the perceived planned obsolescence of their hardware. Key complaints include:
- Reduced Functionality: The Memory Zone app reportedly lacks the real-time download progress and robust search features of the original software.
- Performance Issues: Users have noted slow loading times, choppy video playback, and frequent disconnections when using the new interface.
- Compatibility Gaps: Some users found that their specific drive serial numbers starting with legacy codes are not fully supported by the new software ecosystem.
