Ngenic is a Swedish energy technology company founded in 2010 and headquartered in Uppsala.[1] The company develops smart heating products, including the Ngenic Tune thermostat, which optimizes residential heating systems using cloud-based algorithms and real-time electricity spot pricing.[2]
The original company, Ngenic AB (publ), was publicly traded on the Spotlight Stock Market. It went bankrupt on 28 April 2025 after failing to sustain a business model that provided ongoing cloud services funded by one-time hardware sales.[3][4] Its assets were acquired by the family-owned Aurorakoncernen, which operates through Ngenic Energi AB (org.nr 556369-7977).[5][6]
Consumer-impact summary
- After the 2025 bankruptcy and acquisition, Ngenic Energi AB imposed mandatory monthly subscriptions (49-79 SEK/month) on all customers, including those who had paid a one-time "lifetime" price of 5,395 SEK for perpetual service.[7]
- Customers who refuse to subscribe lose all smart heating control. The hardware reverts to a passive temperature display.[8]
- The Ngenic Tune system is entirely cloud-dependent; no meaningful computation occurs in the local hardware, giving the cloud operator complete control over device functionality.[9]
- On Trustpilot, the company's rating dropped to 1.5 out of 5 stars, with 91% of reviewers giving one star after the subscription mandate.[10]
Incidents
Forced subscription on “lifetime” Tune customers (2025)
After Ngenic AB went bankrupt in April 2025, the new owners (Aurorakoncernen, operating through Ngenic Energi AB) imposed mandatory monthly subscriptions on all Ngenic Tune customers. Customers who had paid 5,395 SEK for a one-time "lifetime" service were placed in the same position as monthly subscribers. Without a subscription, the devices' smart heating features are disabled.[7]
