Google Nest, formerly branded Google Home, is a line of smart home products sold by Google, including smart speakers, smart displays, streaming devices, thermostats, smoke detectors, routers, and security systems including smart doorbells, cameras, and smart locks.[1]

The line originates with Nest Labs, whose smart thermostat launched in 2011. Google acquired Nest Labs for $3.2 billion in January 2014,[2] and in 2019 folded its separate Google Home hardware line into the Nest brand.[3]

Consumer impact summary

Google Nest devices depend on Google's cloud services and Google Home app for core functionality, so changes to Google's software support, app requirements, and data collection terms directly affect installed hardware. Google has ended cloud support for older Nest products while the hardware itself still functions, and has required app migrations to keep devices usable.

Incidents

Google's 2025 changes to Google Nest (2025)

  • Google is ending cloud-based support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats in October 2025, removing app control and safety features from working hardware.
  • Google is requiring Nest Protect users to migrate from the Nest app to the Google Home app, with expanded data collection terms, to maintain product functionality.
