Micron Technology, Inc, also known simply as Micron, is an American semiconductor company that specializes in designing, manufacturing and selling computer memory and data storage dies. Their product stack includes DRAM, HBM and NAND flash. The company was founded in 1978.

Prior to shuttering the Crucial brand in 03 December 2026, Micron used to sell completed RAM kits and SSDs direct-to-consumer.

Incidents

Cartel investigations (1990s—2010s)

During the 90s to early 2010s, Micron alongside competitors were investigated by the European Commission and United States Department of Justice for price fixing. Both agencies found the conspirators to be guilty and operating like a cartel.[1]

Abandoning consumer business (2025.12.03)

On December 3, 2025, Micron announced via a press release that they would be shutting down the Crucial brand, which focused on direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales, to focus exclusively on the AI data center market. In the same PR they stated that product shipments through Crucial would continue until February 2026.[2]

Refusal to uphold Crucial warranties

Following the discontinuation of Crucial and its products, Micron no longer offers warranties that consist of product replacements.

For products that cannot be replaced, the company offers only two warranty claims:

  • A refund of the original purchase price of the product instead of the current market price of that product.
  • Applicable taxes and shipping paid at the time of purchase.[3]
