Similarly to Flock, they are in use world wide and likely feed directly into the Chinese government's surveillance infrastructure and could conceivably be used to find dissidents world-wide.

Products from the semi-state-owned company are also used to monitor Uyghur and Palestinian women.[2]

Hikvision used to advertise automatic recognition of praying, members of the Uyghur minority, and ramadan fasting among its selling points.[2]

Incidents

Removal of functionalities on some PTZ cameras (2022)

In 2022 Hikvision removed functionalities on some PTZ cameras (eg. DS-2DE4A425IW-DE(S6)) with a firmware update. In this instance the auto tracking, which was described as a feature in the user manual, was removed without prior notice with the firmware version V5.7.3SP2.[3][4][5] Some users have reported that the functionality was added back only in the newer hardware revision of that camera, the old version was then marked as discontinued.[6]
