In September 2025, users of the Google Chrome browser on Android reported that autofill from third-party password managers such as Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane had stopped working in the browser, with Google Password Manager intercepting credential prompts instead.[1][2] The behavior did not occur in other Android web browsers.[3]

Background

Google Password Manager is Google's built-in password manager, used for storing passwords and autofilling them in Chrome and on Android.[4] Competing password managers, including Bitwarden and 1Password, offer their own autofill services on Android.[5]

Changes in Chromium, the engine that powers Chrome, led Chrome-based browsers on Android to expect a single autofill provider to be in charge, breaking setups that combined the browser's own save prompts with a third-party manager.[6]

Google's response

Google deprecated autofill compatibility mode in Chrome on Android and advised developers of password manager and autofill services to direct their users to toggle a Chrome setting to keep their service working inside the browser.[7] Techlicious documented the manual fix, which re-enables a third-party provider through Chrome's autofill-services setting.[8]

Consumer response

Consumers have voiced confusion over the change, often not realizing that Google's own setting is what blocked their password manager.[5]
