Android Police reported in late January 2025 that the camera bar on Google Pixel 9 Pro models is separating from the main body of the phone, compromising the dirt and water resistance of the device.[1] TechRadar likewise reported multiple user accounts of Pixel 9 Pro units peeling apart around the camera bar.[2]

Background

Google has sold its Pixel smartphones since 2016, with the camera bar as a distinguishing design element since the Pixel 6 series in 2021.[1] The Pixel 9 Pro, released in August 2024, carried over the camera bar design.[1] Earlier Pixel models had seen their own issues, including the battery performance programs for the Pixel 4a and 6a.[1]

Camera bar separation

In October 2024, a Pixel 9 Pro owner reported camera lenses fogging in the shower, and removing the protective case revealed the camera bar separating from the back panel of the two-week-old device; Google's New York City store provided a replacement.[1] In January 2025, another Pixel 9 Pro owner reported the camera bar separating from the phone with a crack running along the upper edge, despite the three-month-old device having been protected by a case and screen protector since purchase and never dropped.[1] In both instances the bar separated along the upper edge, leaving room for moisture and dirt ingress and undermining the device's IP rating.[1]

Google's response

In the January 2025 case, the owner reported that Google support declined to replace the device because it was more than 90 days old.[1] Android Police wrote that given the commonalities between the incidents, Google was likely aware of the structural concerns with the Pixel 9 Pro's camera bar, but that the company had not taken existing units off sale or offered a replacement program, as it had previously done for Pixel 8 series display issues.[1]

Consumer response

Pixel 9 Pro owners continued to report camera bar separation into 2026, including on Google's own support community, where a repair technician contributor wrote that many Pixel 9 units showed the same glue failure and that Google had changed the design.[3] A further community thread from June 2026 asked whether Google had acknowledged the issue or offered warranty support for it.[4]
