Features of ovens locked behind cloud (date)

Some GE ovens have certain features locked behind a cloud integration, requiring the user to connect the stove to Wi-Fi and install the SmartHQ app in order to unlock.[citation needed] The ovens have the necessary physical buttons to utilise the features, but the oven refuses till the requirements are met.[citation needed] The sales literature [1], manual[citation needed], and website[citation needed] have no mention of such requirements.

DRM on refrigerator water filters (2017 - Present)

Main article: GE Refrigerator water filter DRM

GE refrigerators manufactured since 2017 make use of RFID-based Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems in their water filtration units, preventing the use of third-party replacement filters.[2] These systems use 13.56 MHz ISO14443A passive RFID tags embedded in filter cartridges that communicate with readers inside the refrigerator cabinet.[3] When non-authenticated filters are detected, the system displays "Leak Detected" error messages & disables water & ice dispensing functionality entirely.[4]

It is possible to request a filter bypass plug from GE that allows the refrigerator to dispense unfiltered water.[5] To receive the filter, the refrigerator must be registered with GE. Registering the appliance online requires the user to create a GE Appliances account and agree to mandatory arbitration with no opt-out.[6]
