The Syneco 100kg 3 Step Domestic Lite Aluminium Ladder is a household stepladder sold by hardware retailer Bunnings in Australia.[1]

Background

The ladder is an aluminium domestic stepladder rated to 100 kg, sold through Bunnings as part of a range of Syneco ladder products including steel-folding and slim-line variants.[1]

Failure mode

In an April 2026 video, the YouTube channel Artisan Makes documented the ladder failing, explained the failure mode, and showed customer reviews reporting the same failure.[2] As documented in the review, the screws that hold the ladder's steps are not resistant to shear and bending forces, and fail by metal fatigue after a period of normal use. In short tests the ladder appears safe, but the fatigue failure develops over time rather than immediately.[2][3] At the time of the review, the ladder remained on sale.[2]

Bunning's response

Bunning has replied to some negative reviews on the product's webpage with the following:

No actions nor further statements have been made as of 22 October 2026 despite the problem going back to at least 2023.

Consumer response

Customer reviews shown in the video report the ladder failing in the same way.[2]

The product had a rating of 2.7 out of 5 stars as of 22 October 2026, with more below average and negative reviews (10) than positive (7). The most common complaint is the screws on the second step shearing despite the user being significantly below the maximum weight the step-ladder is rated for, in some cases resulting in injury.[1]
