Incidents

This is a list of all consumer-protection incidents this company is involved in. Any incidents not mentioned here can be found in the Buffalo Wild Wings category.

Adding afford care charge (2015)

On January 1, 2015, the company implemented a extra $0.14-$0.25 charge labeled as "Afford Care" to restaurants located Lubbock Texas after a bill was passed mandating companies with at least 100 employees provide insurance to 70% of their employees.[2][3][4] The added charge received huge backlash from consumers, with many finding it outrageous to spend an extra charge for healthcare, while others didn't mind the charge, wishing that the company provided them knowledge of the charge beforehand.[5][6][7]

The franchise, Howard Restaurant Group, responded to the backlash on January 6, claiming it was to offset newly added employee costs due to the Healthcare Act;

"Due to the Affordable Healthcare Act and its requirements of healthcare coverage on all full time employees, the Howard Restaurant Group has decided instead of cutting back employee hours or raising food and beverage prices we have implemented a 2% surcharge on all guest checks to offset cost of the federally mandated healthcare with the least possible impact to the consumer."[8]

However on January 7, the company director of public relations, Heather Leiferman, announced the company removing the Afford care charge, citing;

"The health care surcharge at our franchised Buffalo Wild Wings in Lubbock, TX has been removed. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. Our priority is to always provide our guests a great experience every day so they can enjoy our wings, beer and sports,"[9]

Norovirus incident stock price decrease

On February 2, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment announced an investigation of 10 individuals at a restaurant located in Overland Park after several customers reported being sick on January 29.[10][11] On January 30, the department conducted an investigation, finding 17 health code violations with the restaurant, including;[12][13]

  • Alcohol near dead bugs
  • Employees wiping their nose and face with gloves while still handling food
  • cooking utensils with food debris
  • Dinner napkins stored on the floor in employee bathroom
  • No hot water in employee bathroom[14]

Although most were corrected during investigation, the restaurant closed down on the same day, later reopening the next day on January 31.[15] After that announcement, the company stock fell to 8% [16][17]

On February 5, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment confirmed 1 case of norovirus to be related to Buffalo Wild wings restaurants. The company responded by saying;

"Despite one positive norovirus test, there is still no confirmation that our Overland Park restaurant is the source. We understand that the Johnson County health department is investigating multiple potential sources of the virus, which has been widespread in the community for several weeks."[18]

Later on around February, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment confirmed two more customers being infected. Additionally, they also reported not finding the cause of the virus.[19][20]

Hepatitis A (2019)

On April 11. the Division of Public Health announced a Hepatitis A outbreak affecting unknown amount of customers and employees at a Delaware Middletown restaurant between March 31 through April 10.[21] The restaurant was notified and closed on April 10 for cleaning and sanitation, after which was reopened on April 11.[22] The next day, the Divison of Public Health issued another announcement detailing the outbreak occurred earlier and at two more restaurants located in Stone Ballon on May 20, and Pulaski Highway on March 21. In Both announcements, the Divison of Public Heath urges affected customers to call their health clinic.[23]

Point Program Contain Security Vulnerabilities (2019)

Around 2019 through early 2025, Buffalo Wild Wings Mobile app faced numerous security vulnerabilities impacting unknown amounts of users. The earliest known instance is from 2019 from a man named Mr. Najera, who lost 9,700 points from an unknown hacker in Fresno, California.[24] Users on Reddit began reporting on their accounts being hacked around 2020, claiming a lost for points spanning 1,000 - 50,000 (depending on how much points a user has) across various different states.[25] Users reported receiving varying responses from Buffalo, with some claiming they never received a response back[26][27][28][29][30][31], while others reported received a response and getting their points back.[32][33][34][35][36] Additionally, some users claim having difficulty login into their accounts, along with other issues.[37][38][39] The company updated their security standards on November 2023 by implementing MFA.[40] The community reacted with excited and relief over the news, however after the update came out, some users reported still getting hacked, having login issue and difficulties not receiving their points after orders.[41][42][43][44][45]

Hidden Delivery Fee (2021)

On November 16, the company was hit with a class action lawsuit over allegedly charging customers an extra $3 for an unknown delivery fee. A lawsuit filed by Michelle Wheeldon claims the company added a extra $3 charge labeled as "Service Fee' to her online order on March 26,2021, totaling to $70.75.[46] As of March 2026, the lawsuit is still outgoing.

Hidden Carryout Fee (2023)

Around January 2022[47], Buffalo Wild Wings secretly added a $0.99 takeout fee across all its restaurants without disclosing it to customers, citing at the bottom of receipts "This service fee helps us operate our business." [48][49] Customers went on Reddit, sharing disbelief, confusion, and frustration, with many claiming it to be due to corporate greed.[50][51][52][53] Over the upcoming month the hidden fee began to gain more traction as more users shared their experience, with one filling a lawsuit On August 22 claiming the company's failure to disclose the hidden fee to consumer, citing it's a "deception”. [54][55] In 2023, the incident soon reached into media outlets and articles, highlighting the companies hidden fee. On June 21, Buffalo Wild Wing announced the removal of the fee, citing it was all a test but "the test is now coming to an end".[56]

"Several Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants have tested a take-out fee, which is disclosed to guests prior to purchase; however, we are ending the test and will have the fee removed by the end of this summer"[57][58]

Consumer Mistreatment

Customer Receipt Message

Customers not allowed to sing the National Athem after previously being allowed to (2017)

On September11, 2017, employees refused to play the national athem song for customers during the football games after having previously played it for the last game, citing it was "to controversial" and it violated company policy. Customers responded by posting the incident on social media, gaining huge interactions that led many to be confused and angry. One customer involved in the incident said " Nobody understood what was so controversial, its 9/11, and its a sporting event, why is it controversial."[59][60] The company issued several responses regarding this incident.[61][62][63]

Buffalo Wild Wings company response on their website;

"We apologize that Guests at the Eastvale, California location didn’t receive the positive sports viewing experience we strive to provide in all of our restaurants every day. This was the action of one individual and does not reflect our corporate practice. Our intent is to show game broadcasts in their entirety including the National Anthem, post-game interviews, and highlights."[61][63]

World Wide Wings (company that operated the restaurant) responded on television saying;

"World Wide Wings, a Buffalo Wild Wings franchise, apologizes for what happened at our restaurant before the Monday night football game. We do not have a policy regarding this matter."[62][63]

A response from Joe Janaszek, a Chief Marketing Officer for World Wide Wings

"This gentleman who no longer works for us, made the decision to turn the volume down during the national anthem ... He claimed it was company policy, because it was too controversial. We don't know why he did that, and we wish he hadn't done it."[62]

Making Fun of Homeless People (2018)

On May 28, a homeless customer ordered chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings located in Lake Charles.[64] After ordering, the customer was in tears when after receiving his receipts, he found a message that reads" "For homeless f@^*! Let sit and get gross", and on the bottom of the receipt reads "I love you".[65] Allegedly, the note was not supposed to be seen by the customer.[66] Customers in the store immediately reacted with anger and disgust, with one female customer commenting to a new station;

“I was just really upset about it, like, why would you do that, especially, and he said, ‘You all know that I’m homeless; I don’t have anywhere to live,’ and it just really upset me,” Weston said. “And I was like, ‘That’s not OK, one, for someone to treat a customer like that, let alone a customer in his condition."

The company responded by firing the employees, along with giving the customer 1 year worth of free wings, hotel room, and a Walmart giftcard. It also gave away a large amount of wings to a homeless shelter.[67]

“It’s embarrassing for this gentleman and it’s very inhumane on the part of the employees, It’s not our culture and it’s not who we are.”

Prioritizing Racist Customers over Black Customers (2019)

On October 26, 18 customers (whom included 6 adults and 12 children) went to a restaurant in Naperville after the children went to play in a basketball tournament. While being seated, an employee asked the customers to move because a customer didn't want to sit near black people, soon later being told a group of 18 people had "reservations" and that they need to move.[68] The original customers decided to leave the place and go somewhere else, after which, posting the incident on Facebook where it gain mainstream media attention.[69] The company responded to the incident, apologizing for the employees behavior and shortly after firing the employees.

Refusing to Serve customers based on their Race and Gender (2019)

In 2019, a ex-employee filed a lawsuit against Buffalo Wild Wings and its parent company Inspire brands for allegedly "creating a racially motivated work environment". The lawsuit alleges the employees made racially motivated comments towards customers, along with claiming the employees "refused to serve black customers" because they "don't give good tips".[70][71][72]

Printing Racial Slurs on Receipts (2025)

In November 2024, a family couple, including a black disable veteran, went to Buffalo Wild Wings location to have dinner in Woodbridge, Virginia. After ordering and going home, it was when the couple notice their receipt contained the word "n@gs" on both their receipt and box. Upon realizing this, the wife went on Yelp to leave a 1-star review on the establishment, citing;[73][74]

"It’s 2024 and a manager at Buffalo Wild Wings store #280 Woodbridge VA did not ask for a name for take out order but has the audacity [to] put ‘@n*gs’ for our names"[75]

In addition, she also went on to post a video on Tiktok describing her experience. Shortly after gaining media attention, the company fired the employees.[76]

The family couple later went on to file a complaint, which then turn into a $5 million class action lawsuit against the company, citing it "reopened wounds" due to the customer history to being "subjected to racial animus and harassment in the past".
