In 2021, Boris FX made it impossible to re-activate pre-V6 Mocha Pro licenses when transferring the software to a new computer.

Background

Boris FX is a software developer based in Miami, Florida, that develops computer graphics software for use in the visual effects industry.[1] One of its most widely used products is Mocha Pro, a planar tracking and visual effects software package.[2]

FlexLM licenses discontinued

Starting 1 September 2021, Boris FX discontinued its support of all FlexLM licenses in favor of RLM (Reprise License Manager) for its planar tracking software, Mocha Pro. In doing so, Boris FX rendered all versions of Mocha Pro prior to V6 non-transferable from the computer on which they were installed. According to a notice from Boris FX's official FAQ posted on 20 October 2022, "moving your license to a new computer will require an upgrade or subscription plan."[3] Because of this policy change, a user who purchased Mocha Pro at any time prior to 1 September 2021 is no longer able to re-install their copy of Mocha Pro on a different computer without paying for an upgrade or subscription.[3]

Boris FX's response

Boris FX states that it utilizes the RLM licensing system for all license types, with licenses available as node-locked or floating, under either subscription or perpetual terms. The company's FlexLM end-of-life notice recommends that affected users upgrade to Mocha Pro 2021 or later.[3]

Consumer response
