Background
The INDX is Bondtech's automatic tool-changing system. It uses wireless induction heating and contactless temperature sensing to enable thin, passive tools, which is what lets it do fast, low-waste filament and nozzle swaps mid-print. It ships in Bondtech's own Founders Edition and as the basis for Prusa's CORE One+ INDX conversion kit. A key detail that matters here: the nozzle is the induction-heated element itself, proprietary to the system, so Bondtech is the only source. You cannot drop in a standard V6 or Diamondback nozzle.
Incident
This did not come from an announcement. The story surfaced through a support ticket rather than a disclosure. A Founders Edition owner who prints abrasives asked about his nozzles, and founder Martin Bondéus replied on July 17, 2026 explaining that a fully hardened version was evaluated at around 60 HRC but could not be machined reliably, so the nitrocarburized version shipped instead. Around the same time, Bondtech staff confirmed the HRC 30 to 32 figure on the company Discord. The screenshots hit Reddit within hours, and both the r/3Dprinting and r/prusa3d threads blew up with photos of retail boxes, invoices, and packing slips all printed with the word "Hardened."
Bondtech marketed the INDX nozzles as hardened steel suitable for abrasive filaments. The Founders Edition units shipped with nozzles that turned out to measure roughly 30 HRC on the Rockwell scale, versus the 60 that is typical for abrasion-resistant printing. In other words they are about half as hard as the word "hardened" normally implies. The shipped nozzles are not traditional hardened steel; they are ordinary steel treated by nitrocarburizing, a surface treatment that diffuses nitrogen and carbon into the outer layer while the core stays soft. Community posts say Bondtech hit technical problems producing the originally intended hardened nozzle and substituted this version late in development.
For context on the hardness numbers, Bondtech's own statement lays out the scale: brass nozzles sit around 0 to 10 HRC, plain steel around 20 to 25, the shipped INDX nozzles at 30 to 32, and true hardened nozzles at about 55 to 60.
Bondtech's response

Bondtech published its formal update today, signed by Gustav Bondéus. The gist:
They acknowledge the error and apologize for failing to communicate it clearly. On the marketing versus reality point, Bondtech says plainly that the nozzles were sold as hardened and abrasive-resistant and, in the founder's words, "they are not, in the way that the description leads you to expect."
On scope, this affects every nozzle that shipped with the Founders Edition and every nozzle in the initial batches of the Prusa CORE One+ INDX upgrade kit. Boxes may still carry the incorrect "hardened" label, which they say will be fixed on future boxes.
On what it means for printing, Bondtech says the current nozzles are fine for the large majority of non-abrasive materials (PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, PC, Nylon, and so on) and will perform as expected. Abrasive filaments (glass fiber, carbon fiber, glow-in-the-dark, metal-filled) will cause accelerated wear. They have committed to publishing an actual wear profile, including how many kilograms of abrasive filament a nozzle survives by a defined metric, in a follow-up post in the coming weeks.
On compensation, there is still no concrete plan. Bondtech says it will not promise dates or pricing it cannot back up, and that a truly hardened INDX nozzle is still a long way from serial production, with development, testing, and validation likely to take many months. A refund and return is available, but they would rather offer affected owners an upgrade path later so they can keep using the INDX in the meantime. Earlier Discord messages had promised that all Founders Edition backers would be compensated, but the specific form of that compensation is still undefined as of today.
Consumer response
Consumer response has been sharply negative, framed less as disappointment than as betrayal. The main r/prusa3d thread is titled around Bondtech having lied and pulled a bait and switch, and on the Prusa forum owners went straight to legal language, with one poster calling it a breach of contract and telling people to send the units back. It spread fast: the r/3Dprinting thread passed 600 upvotes within a day, and buyers posted photos of boxes, packing slips, and invoices all printed with "Hardened." Two things amplified the anger beyond the hardness numbers: Bondtech quietly edited its product pages the same day the story broke, which many read as scrubbing the record, and the disclosure surfaced through an individual support ticket rather than an announcement, feeding a sense the company only spoke up because it got caught. The trust damage also spilled onto Prusa, since its kit page advertised hardened nozzles too, pulling in the much larger pool of open Prusa orders.
It has not been a total pile-on, though. Prusa moderators asked people to calm down and aim their frustration at Bondtech rather than Prusa, some took an "innovation requires risk" view, and the trade coverage repeatedly stressed a genuinely mitigating point: the problem only matters if you print abrasives, and anyone running PLA, PETG, ASA, or ABS is unaffected. Worth noting that Bondtech's formal statement only went up today, so there is not yet real reaction to that specific post; the anger so far is aimed at the leak, the founder's email, and the Discord messages from the preceding two weeks.
A specific sticking point is how Bondtech's blog frames compensation. Rather than committing to simply replace what buyers already paid for, the post floats the idea of a "% discount" on hardened nozzles as a possible remedy, while admitting in the same breath that those nozzles do not exist yet and are still many months from serial production. So the proposed gesture is a partial discount on a future product Bondtech has not built, instead of giving affected owners the actual hardened, abrasive-resistant nozzles they were sold, charged for, and shipped as the softer hardened version. For buyers who wanted hardened nozzles on day one, that reads as being asked to pay again, at some undefined later date, for the thing they thought they already bought.
