BlackVue mandatory app registration removed the ability for dashcam owners to connect to their locally present camera over Wi-Fi without first creating an account & logging in over the internet. BlackVue parent company Pittasoft Co. Ltd. announced the change on March 13, 2025, & implemented it in Android app version 3.66 (April 1, 2025)[1] & iOS version 4.0 (April 3, 2025).[2][3] This was Pittasoft's second attempt at mandatory registration; the first, in March 2023, was reversed within days after user complaints on forums & app stores.[4]

Background

Pittasoft Co. Ltd., founded in 2007 in South Korea, manufactures dashcams under the BlackVue brand.[5] The BlackVue companion app provides access to live view, recorded footage playback, & camera settings over a direct Wi-Fi connection between the user's phone & the dashcam. Before March 2023, none of these local functions required an account or internet connection.[4]

In 2015, Pittasoft introduced BlackVue Over the Cloud, a connected service enabling remote live viewing, GPS tracking, & push notifications.[5] The cloud service initially included a free tier marketed as "Free Forever." In January 2025, Pittasoft notified users that all cloud services would move to paid-only subscriptions, with users reporting a price of $16 per month.[6]

First attempt & reversal

In March 2023, a BlackVue app update began requiring users to create an account & log in before accessing their dashcam, even over a direct Wi-Fi connection. Users on DashCamTalk reported being unable to download incident footage without an internet login & described the new app as "horrid."[4]

BlackVue responded on the same DashCamTalk thread. On March 23, 2023, Pittasoft released version 3.42, which added a Guest mode allowing direct Wi-Fi access without a login requirement.[4] The reversal took 8 days from the initial complaints. Guest mode remained available for the next 2 years.

Mandatory registration reimposed

On March 13, 2025, BlackVue published a blog post titled "Discover the Latest BlackVue App Update" announcing that "a BlackVue account will be required to access your camera."[3] The same post confirmed that "Non-login Wi-Fi Mode will no longer be available" & that the Event Map feature would be discontinued.[3]

The updated apps rolled out on April 1, 2025 (Android v3.66) & April 3, 2025 (iOS v4.0).[1] The v3.66 Android changelog listed "BlackVue account now required" under "Important Changes."[1]

Offline mode caveat

BlackVue's announcement stated that "the app won't require an internet connection once you are logged in" & that users can "connect locally to your dash cam anytime" as long as they do not log out.[3] The first login still requires an internet connection. If the app logs the user out (which the announcement acknowledged had been a recurring bug, listing a "critical log-out error" fix), the user cannot access their locally present dashcam until they reconnect to the internet to re-authenticate.[3]

Pittasoft's stated rationale

The blog post described the mandatory account requirement as intended "to ensure a seamless and secure user experience" & claimed it "allows for better integration with connected services and personalized app functionality."[3] No technical explanation was provided for why local Wi-Fi access to a dashcam on the same network requires an internet-authenticated account.

App permissions & data collection

Android app version 3.66 requests 43 permissions according to APKMirror.[1]

Pittasoft's privacy policy, hosted on Iubenda, discloses the use of Meta Events Manager, HubSpot Analytics, & TikTok conversion tracking for advertising & analytics purposes.[7] Requiring account creation means every BlackVue app user now provides Pittasoft with an email address & device identifiers that can be linked to these third-party advertising platforms.

Consumer response

On the Apple App Store, the BlackVue app holds a 3.8 out of 5 rating from approximately 2,200 ratings.[2] Multiple reviews cite the mandatory registration as their reason for low ratings, with users writing that the app "worked just fine for years PRIOR to their requiring you to have an account" & that "NOBODY needs or wants an account" to view local videos on cameras they already own.[2]

Reddit's r/Dashcam hosted a thread on April 2, 2025, collecting user reactions to the mandatory login. Users reported switching away from BlackVue, with one writing they would never again buy or recommend the brand.[8] The 2023 reversal had established an expectation that BlackVue would maintain local access without an account; the 2025 reimposition broke that expectation.
